Competences

Self (personal) competence and social competence. Beyond technical knowledge.

“In view of multiple challenges in their professional and personal life, people have to learn to constantly redefine themselves in ever more complex social relationship systems. Being open for new experiences, willing to constantly review the own orientation. Awareness for others and those with other beliefs, tolerance and ability to communicate, and willingness to actively participate in shaping social and societal tasks. Conveying these vital skills is a central task of the education system.” (Delphi survey 1996/1998: Potentials and dimensions of the knowledge society – Impacts on education processes and education structures)

Action competence. In institutions such as schools, high schools, training facilities, companies and also during the “Erlebnistage” experiential days, everything centres around the individual and its action competence. Comprehensive action competence, however, does not only entail knowledge about history or mathematics, but also abilities, skills, strategies and maybe even attitudes that are usually summarised by the terms self (personal) competence and social competence.

Our competence model. Our work is based on a self-developed and differentiated competence model on its own. This applies for both our training program and our experiential outdoor education programs. Although individual action competence should always be viewed as a whole, this model provides a structure and orientation facilitating target-focused work. Action competence is split into the following three sections: self competence, social competence and subject-matter competence. Our works aims at supporting young people by enhancing their action competence in a holistic manner, using the methods of experiential outdoor education with nature as the preferred space for learning and experiencing.

Self competences are personal attitudes and abilities, such as enthusiasm, resilience, achievement abilities, willingness to learn, self-management and self-awareness.

Social competences are willingness and abilities in dealing with other people, such as empathy/social awareness, communication, problem-solving, cooperation, responsibility.

Subject-matter competences are knowledge and skill. This includes sport-related knowledge and skills, but also knowledge regarding conversation and the rules of feedback.
